Worm Tubes

Serula

This fossil specimen is a block of limestone matrix with circular and oval sections exposed at the cleaved surface.  There are long and irregularly arranged tubes with filling of the same material as the matrix.  The sediment is middle Jurassic from the Peterborough area and show Serpulid tube worms.  It is difficult to know the exact species but Serpula is the generic classification for these types of fossils.

Serpula
Here is a more complete fossil of the type of worm tubes seen in the matrix.  The worms tend to cluster together and form a colonial group.  Each worm tube would contain a single worm, able to extend tentacles out of the end of the tube to filter feed in the moving tide or flow of water.
